Moments : Scary Thought

“The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality,
and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.”
~Samuel Johnson~

As far as travel goes, I'm pretty new on the scene. Even so, there is no mistaking that its magical grip has taken a hold of me, and I don't foresee that it will be letting loose any time soon. This innate and undeniable desire to move consumes me in ways that were completely foreign just a few years ago. In fact, traveling isn't the only thing that's new to me.....Photography.....that's new, too. I didn't get serious about photography until I had my neck injury/surgery and since then it has, what I've said on many occasion, filled a hole that rock climbing left behind. This hobby is anything but a passing phase, if anything, the passion I have for my chosen craft grows stronger by the day. My photography also lead me to traveling more, before 10/2007 I had never stepped foot on an airplane. Even though I've only done it twice since then, I now crave to pack up and go!

When thinking about vacations I always find myself dreaming about the west coast. This year, I plan to take my birthday trip on that side of the country, again. I can't help it, staying away is just not an option. After getting a taste of Big Sur the Pacific Coast will always remain near and dear to my soul. I think about that April 08 vacation all the time. It was truly an amazing experience for me. I was lucky enough to witness some of the most breathtaking sights along the coast of Big Sur, however, I do want to venture to new territory. Let's face it, I'm a new traveler and I've got a lot of ground to cover, especially since I haven't even been abroad yet! Seriously.

I want to formally announce for the sake of myself and the universe where I plan to go for my birthday trip in October, but I sort of want it to be a bit of a surprise. I also want to do a giveaway when I do it, so be on the look out.

This is a photo of a collection I just found a home for. I'm sure you've collected random bits while on vacation or an afternoon stroll. In my collection you will find shells, cool rocks, sea glass, frilly feathers, mini cones, dead butterflies, and whatever else catches my eye! I put that little reminder in with the items since most of them were picked up while we were on a trip. I read those words, "Imagine Life Without Vacations", and I cringe!! All the more reason to keep my eye on the prize.

  1. what a great thought. I have a large vase filled with seashells that I picked up one vacation. It sits on my desk and I smile often because of it.

amazing what wings our passions can give us.

  4. Oh...I know where you are coming from. I am a travel addict too. I was lucky enough to have parents who loved to travel and they took me most everywhere with them. Sri Lanka, Europe , New Zealand , Hawaii, Malaysia, Singapore...and as I got older I just kept on travelling. And the great thing is that it NEVER gets old. You never feel like there is nothing left to see.

  8. Your collection and the saying tucked in with it are darling and profound. It really hit me. I haven't been on vacation for over ten years (two-night trips over to our coast just don't count as vacations). Case in point, my birthday is today and you don't see me heading out the door with suitcases! We just might have to get to the beach this weekend afterall.....

  9. I know how you feel. I have had a love of travel since a teenager. I have travelled extensively though the UK, Europe, Egypt, Israel, New Zealand any many more places. I would love to travel further but for now I am bound to a more local scene due to kids and money. I only wish I new about photography when I was doing my travelling.

I hope you plans for your birthday holiday go well.

  10. I've said before I love to travel though I don't consider myself well travel. My husband and I use to loosely follow a rule: get out of town at least once a month. Get out of the country at least once a year. We pretty much stuck to that until 2008 due to my mother getting ill. When the dust settles, I so look forward to planning another trip and await to hear your plans, too.

  20. I'm still thinking about your neck injury/surgery... did it happen while climbing?

I can't wait to find out where you are going to go in the fall. That's really the best time to travel. We had the best weather here in October... so if you're near San Diego, I'm going to have to take you & Cody to my favorite breakfast place. Strawberry Crepes!

  23. A beautiful and profound visual. Even when I was unable to travel, I still imagined that I would again. And I have.

How exciting it is to be a new traveler. The whole world is waiting on you. I look forward to seeing your 2009 vacation pictures of your October vacation-wherever it turns out to be.

  24. My secret wish is to spend my 40th BD in Paris this September. It's a long-shot at this point considering the current economy, but a girl can still dream.

  26. My family used to travel quite a bit when my sister and I were kids. I would love to be able to do that with my family. My husband and I have a wishlist that we look at periodically to remind us why we should save instead of spend.

    Nice haiku!
