An Entrepreneur's Spring + Summer Reading List | Book Recommendations | Boone, NC Photographer

Check any side-table around my home and you’ll find no less than three abandoned books stacked next to a pile of papers and do-dad’s also littering the surface. It’s not uncommon for me to start feverishly devouring a new book only to leave it halfway finished as the bestseller becomes a bulky dust collector. It’s been this way for a while, too. I can’t even remember the last book I read in its entirety!

Is this a problem that you encounter, too, or do you go through books quickly?!

I’ve decided—as I have on many occasions—that I will set aside time every day this spring and summer so that I can finish and start some of the titles I’m excited to unravel more fully. A few of these I have already delved into, but two of them are completely new to me. My goal is to finish at least one book in a month, although I’m hoping to read two at a time so there’s a chance that I could consume them sooner and move on to the other stacks patiently waiting for some action!

Below are the 5 Books On My Spring + Summer Reading List.

The descriptions I have shared are all from Amazon.com since I have yet to read these from beginning to end. Until I can review them myself, here goes...

Making Ideas Happen Book Cover | An Entrepreneur's Spring + Summer Reading List | Book Recommendations | Boone, NC Photographer1. Making Ideas Happen by Scott Belsky

"Ideas are easy. Implementation is hard. This book helps you with the hard part."
-Guy Kawasaki, author of Enchantment

“According to productivity expert Scott Belsky, no one is born with the ability to drive creative projects to completion. Execution is a skill that must be developed by building your organizational habits and harnessing the support of your colleagues.

As the founder and CEO of Behance, a company on a mission to empower and organize the creative world, Belsky has studied the habits of especially productive individuals and teams across industries. Now he has compiled the principles and techniques they share, and presents a systematic approach to creative organization and productivity.

While many of us focus on generating and searching for great ideas, Belsky shows why it's better to develop the capacity to make ideas happen—a capacity that endures over time.” - via amazon.com

The Artist's Way Book Cover | An Entrepreneur's Spring + Summer Reading List | Book Recommendations | Boone, NC Photographer

“The Artist’s Way is the seminal book on the subject of creativity. An international bestseller, millions of readers have found it to be an invaluable guide to living the artist’s life. Still as vital today—or perhaps even more so—than it was when it was first published one decade ago, it is a powerfully provocative and inspiring work. In a new introduction to the book, Julia Cameron reflects upon the impact of The Artist’s Way and describes the work she has done during the last decade and the new insights into the creative process that she has gained. Updated and expanded, this anniversary edition reframes The Artist’s Way for a new century.” - via amazon.com

“Don’t face reality. Create reality!”
- Pam Grout, author of E-Squared

“E-Squared could best be described as a lab manual with simple experiments to prove once and for all that reality is malleable, that consciousness trumps matter, and that you shape your life with your mind. Rather than take it on faith, you are invited to conduct nine 48-hour experiments to prove there really is a positive, loving, totally hip force in the universe. Yes, you read that right. It says prove.

The experiments, each of which can be conducted with absolutely no money and very little time expenditure, demonstrate that spiritual principles are as dependable as gravity, as consistent as Newton’s laws of motion. For years, you’ve been hoping and praying that spiritual principles are true. Now, you can know.” - via amazon.com

Handmade Book

TN Book Cover

Here is the cover I made for a 4 x 6 mini-book.
I scanned in our Smoky Mountain map for the background, and added the text in photoshop.

I have wanted to do a little scrapbook of our trip to Tennessee,
and finally found this quick and easy tutorial on how to do so using very basic supplies.

For weeks I have been scouring the internet in search of an easy way to bind my own books.
I have found some decent tutorials, but I wasn't ready to devote the time required.
Until I found this tutorial, it's not new, I saw it a while ago.....
but I forgot about it.

Handmade Book

I don't really do scrapbook pages,
so I thought that this would be perfect to put all of our trip details,
photos, & other misc. paraphernalia I tend to pick up when I'm away from home.
I'm still working on the inside pages at the moment, but when it's done,
I'll probably share it with you.

What do you usually do with your trip/vacation memorabilia?

....On My List....

Findings:

I tend to judge books by their covers, which is initially what enticed me to find out more about this particular book. The cover is so whimsical with the branches bending every which way.........and so far from what I have read of the first chapter her writing mirrors just that. She paints a very detailed picture......I can't say too much more since I have yet to read it, but I hope to change that very soon!

The Monsters of Templeton

(Link will take you to Amazon)

Excerpt from the first chapter:

That morning, before I drew my hand away from the monster, I felt an overwhelming sadness, a sudden memory of one time in high school when I slipped to the country club docks at midnight with my friends, and, giggling, naked, we went into the dark star-stippled water, and swam to the middle of the lake. We treaded water there in the blackness, all of us fallen silent in the feeling of swimming in such perfect space. I looked up and began to spin. The stars streaked circular above me, my body was wrapped in the warm black, my hands had disappeared, my stomach was no longer, I was only a head, a pair of eyes. As I touched the beast I remembered how, even on that long-ago night, I could feel a tremendous thing moving in the depths below me, something vast and white and singing.

Here is a sneak peek at the first chapter - Link

*I took the time to read it and was immediately drawn in to Laurens style of writing......I just love the metaphors that she uses.....and after Botany of Desire I will be happy to grab on to some much need fiction. This book may just be the ticket.

FYI- Updates have been made to {366} Photographic Journal.

Sian has tagged me for a book meme. I am somewhat behind since she tagged me like 6 days ago! Sorry. I had to figured out what a meme was cause I've never heard that term before; I am still new to this blogging business so that happens sometimes. Anyhoo, what you have to do for this particular meme is:

Go to the 161 page of the current book your reading and post the 5th sentence.
(Sounds easy enough, eh)

Soundtrack: Red Hot Chili Peppers in the foreground, backed by heater whoosh on the right, computer cooling fan whoosh on the lower left, mouse clicks, keyboard clatter, creak-creak of those knuckle-like things deep in the neck when I cant my head to one side; and then, outside, a scatter of birdsong, methodical drips on the roof, and the slow sky tear of a propeller plane.

That was a pretty good sentence, yeah? After "Into the Wild" I started reading just last week, "The Botany of Desire" by Michael Pollan. It's described as a plants eye view of the world. It focuses on the stories of four different plants and goes into great detail, I'm still on the first chapter so I can't say a whole lot about it yet. I'm not sure who else is reading a book right now so I don't know if I can pass along the tag, but if you're reading a book right now...........TAG!

*I won't be posting any photos here today, but I did catch up on the other one, 3 new posts.
