Casey + Sarah's Valle Crucis Anniversary Adventure | Boone, NC Couples Photography

By the time Casey contacted me I was already booked on their anniversary date. I was photographing a wedding that weekend, but because their schedule was flexible we were going to shoot for a session on the day after on Sunday. While I knew I'd be worn out after 16+ hours of wedding photography two days before, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be a part of his anniversary surprise!

To celebrate their one year anniversary, Sarah bought Casey tickets to see a Washington Redskins game, one of his favorite teams. So, to step it up, he wanted to surprise her with an anniversary session at the Apple Barn in Valle Crucis where they got married in 2013.

It was a beautiful day before their wedding and it was gorgeous the day after, but they told me it poured on their wedding day, which thwarted their plans for the outdoorsy wedding photos they were hoping for.

Due to the heavy rains they had to do all of their photos under cover. They didn't get to do any by the creek nearby and they weren't able to venture over to the Valle Crucis Community Park to have images done by the Watauga River like they wanted to either.

Even though they have images they love from their wedding, they just didn't get everything that they envisioned. That's where I came to the rescue!

With only 24 hours to go before their photo shoot, I got an email from Casey letting me know that they ran into some issues with their transmission, so they wouldn't be able to make it up to Boone.

Scheduling was a bit tricky, but we managed to get a new date on the calendar after a few emails were exchanged. Casey had to spoil the surprise but I heard that Sarah was still overjoyed to learn about this thoughtful anniversary gift.

After our first rescheduling, we hit a few more snags along the way. Some days got mixed up and then we had to cancel because of the dreadful Boone weather we were experiencing, so there were many delays that tried to get in the way. 34 emails and 1-month later we finally made it happen!

Casey and Sarah were a lot of fun to photograph. I mean, look how smitten they are with one another. They made my job ridiculously easy. I love couples that are playful and don't take themselves too seriously. As you can see, these two lovebirds liked to laugh a lot!

When Casey contacted me about the surprise anniversary photo shoot, he told me that all he wanted was a smile for his wife. Seriously, how sweet is that?!

Here's what I would say to Casey: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I think we all had a blast! :-)

Casey + Sarah's Valle Crucis Anniversary Adventure | Couples Photography Boone, NC

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Sarah + Casey! I'm so glad that you two were able to make a day trip up here to Boone so that I could photograph you after your first year of marriage. All of the fuss that we've had to endure in order to make this "surprise" a reality was definitely worth it! I hope you love this sneak peek as much as I do. I can't wait to share more!

Pennington Family Adventure at Valle Crucis Park | Boone NC Family Photographer

“Blueberries! I see blueberries!”, Everett began to shout and point from the lofty view on his Daddy’s shoulders.

“Where?!”, the rest of us asked puzzled. Between the four of us, we hadn’t yet spotted the wild berries, but as we continued to walk closer to the area he was leading us toward, he became more insistent that they were there.

We finally walked up and saw the bush that he was steering us to. Everett had a good eye, although what he spotted from afar were blackberries not blueberries.

Still, it required a pit-stop so that he could sample nature’s sweet treat! Naturally, everyone else joined in to savor the tangy-sour fruits, too! It was such a tender moment to witness them pick the berries and then share with one another.

Pennington Family Adventure at Valle Crucis Park | Boone NC Family PhotographerThe Pennington Family Photography Adventure took place at the Valle Crucis Park. It’s a gorgeous outdoor area not too far from Boone that offers walking and running trails, a playground, covered pavilions to have picnics, fishing on the Watauga River, and they also host live music every weekend during the summertime as free entertainment for families!

When these four are looking to have an adventure close to home it’s one of their favorite places to make memories as a family, so they frequent this outdoor area pretty regularly, which is why they wanted to have their family photos done at this magical place!

We had to reschedule on two different occasions due to the unpredictable Boone weather.

It’s always tricky when you’re doing outdoor family portraits because the weather can change in an instant here in the mountains, so flexibility is key.

Our back-up plan was to do an “At-Home Adventure” if it rained this time, but the sun finally cooperated on our third attempt!

As we continued to make our way around the perimeter of the Valle Crucis Park, the sun played a game of hide-and-seek. I was hoping that it would keep shining because I was looking forward to shooting during “golden hour.”

Halfway through our session we set-up a blanket tucked in a shady, wooded area where light filtered through the trees when the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. It was a secluded spot where the family of four cuddled up and played airplane with the kiddos.

The little daredevils even did back-flips with the assistance of their parents, it was a lot of fun watching this playful & silly family interact with one another.

When we were done hanging out amongst the trees, we made our way to the stretch of Watauga River that hugs the park to continue the adventure.

Landon showed Everett how to skip rocks along the creek.

Everett hurled them as far as he could.

Cassie and Maya slipped away for a potty break, so the boys daringly rock-hopped across the river while carefully avoiding missteps on the slick rocks.

Maya and Everett were both brave, adventurous little souls.

We started and ended our adventure at the Valle Crucis Park playground.

The parents pushed the siblings in the swings to kick off the fun.

Everett kept yelling, “Higher, higher, Daddy!”

He was so tickled to be gliding through the air alongside his sister.

Two-and-a-half year old, Everett, also had no qualms about climbing up the ladder alone to go down the slide all by himself.

I was nervous watching him do this on his own, but his parents were laid-back and allowed him to be as playful and independent as he wanted to be.

Of course, they were also supportive and helpful when he needed them, but they also gave him his space and room to roam while they watched from a distance.

The swings, slides, and other playground equipment were a great way of getting them warmed up for the photosession and then wearing them out at the end!

As daylight began to fade, we wrapped up the family photography session with some quick portraits of the happily married couple.

I love how at the end of a shoot people usually look so relieved.

My question is usually along the lines of, “Was it as bad as you thought it would be?!”

They tend to chuckle and tell me that they had fun, surprisingly enough.

That’s when I hand out high-fives because infusing fun into photosessions is my sneaky way of helping people become comfortable with being in front of the camera.

DIY Down-Home Backyard Wedding: Emma + Alex | Boone, North Carolina Photographer

Emma’s dreamed of getting married at her childhood home her entire life. The memories she holds of the homestead where she grew up are magical and it was her wish to share the beauty of this secluded sanctuary with her friends and family from near and far.

This down-to-earth couple also had a desire to get married in an intimate, alfresco setting because they both have an extremely close relationship with nature as environmental scientists. They were looking to incorporate that deep appreciation and connection to the outdoors into their ceremony and wedding photos.

The delicate, handmade crown Emma is wearing was decorated with aromatic rosemary. Isn't it lovely?! She didn't seem to think it was too weird when I asked to take a whiff of her head! I could have sniffed her scalp endlessly! hahaha

Emma & Alex's first look took place in the surrounding woods where she spent many summer days having barefoot adventures in the forest.

Emma and Alex were married on the back deck of her parents’ home surrounded by sunshine and people who love them. Since the couple now lives in Colorado, they don’t get to see many of the people that they hold close to their hearts very often.

At the end of their heartfelt ceremony, folks gleefully blew bubbles to celebrate the newlyweds as they walked around basking in the effervescent love.

Having the reception at the family home would have caused too much stress on the property so they took the second half of the wedding festivities to the Apple Barn in Valle Crucis. It’s also a special place because Emma grew up going to contra dances there with her parents.

The bride had a team of family and friends to help make the whole thing come together. There were a ton of awesome DIY decorations that the bride and mother made collectively. The various signs they had scattered throughout were thoughtful, and, of course, you can’t go wrong with fabric-topped mason jars for a rustic touch!

Seed to Plate Catering was there feeding everyone yummy farm-to-table food using locally sourced organic ingredients. The chicken was incredibly juicy and so flavorful! I also loved the garlic-lemon asparagus! Mmmmmmmm! They did a wonderful job catering this event. Working with Seed to Plate was a special treat, indeed!

The main concern for Emma and Alex was to have fun and enjoy themselves in the most laid-back environment possible. From what I experienced, everyone seemed to be having a grand ol’ time fooling around while also facilitating when needed. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with such a friendly and festive bunch!

My Surprise Birthday Dinner @ The Mast Farm Inn | Valle Crucis, NC

Mast Farm Inn | Valle Crucis,
NC

I've driven by this place a dozen times, and I've told myself repeatedly that I'd eat there one of these days. Six years later, it finally happened!

Honestly, I don't know how I let that much time pass before I actually made my way over to eat dinner in this charming little establishment. I mean, it's no secret that I enjoy going out to eat. (I'm always sharing my food with you, it seems.) However, this place can't be compared to the typical dining experiences I frequently have.

FINE DINING & SLOW FOOD COMBINED

It's different because you feel like you're having dinner in someone's house, not a restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, and has very limited seating for service. Reservations are required in order to dine, otherwise, they wouldn't make enough food. You see, they operate differently than restaurants you have become accustomed to. The meals are prepared fresh and made with organic ingredients that are oftentimes locally sourced. That is, if they didn't grow some of the items themselves.

Across the street from the inn are a large number of raised bed gardens where they can pluck ingredients to use that same day. They also put a big emphasis on local items included on the menu; It is something I definitely appreciate. The menu changes every night depending upon what they get their hands on. Surprises were plentiful that evening!

I can't even tell you how giddy I was to be there. It was undoubtedly the best part of my birthday weekend. You know, because of the FOOD! I'll just stop beating around the bush here, and tell you about the amazing meal.

FOOD, DELIGHTFUL FOOD

The dinner began with a basket of homemade white and corny corn bread. They supplied us with a dish of their very flavorful herb butter, which I slathered on top of my cornbread. There was a slightly sweet crust on top that paired so well with the buttery spread. Next up, was the petite vegetable soup which was simple yet satisfying.

For the third course, we were served a mixed green salad topped with local goat cheese, dried cranberries & blueberries, pecans, and a molasses vinaigrette. I devoured this salad even though the dressing wasn't as sweet as I would have wanted it to be. I will say, though, that it was quite interesting. Our main dish consisted of beef bourguignon smothered with a rich red burgundy wine sauce topped with mushrooms and pearl onions. The beef was tender and delicious. No knife required for cutting. The accompanying sides included creamy grits and sauteed green beans. I loved the grits. They were awesome!

A TREAT YOU SHOULDN'T PASS UP

At this point in the meal, I barely had enough room to finish the beef bourguignon ( I ended up taking a portion home) much less leave enough room for dessert. But I'd be crazy to pass up the last course, don't you think?! I ended up going with the chocolate fudge cake (it was called something like that—sorry, I don't have my notes!) that came with homemade caramel ice cream. I could only have one tiny corner of the cake and a few spoonfuls of the ice cream, but oh my word, they were both incredible. The leftover cake went home with me, too!

By the end of our dinner, we had been there for over 2 hours. Tell me, when do you get the opportunity to take your time eating a multiple-course meal like that? Not very often, I'm sure. I know that I'm used to things coming as quickly as possible when dining out, so this was a welcomed alternative because I don't like feeling rushed.

If you'd like to find out more about The Mast Farm Inn, here is a link to their website.

Having dinner at The Mast Farm Inn's restaurant (called Simplicity) was a treat, although I don't think this should just be one of those “special occasion” places to eat. Yes, it was slightly pricier that your typical restaurant. However, for the quality of food, service, and ambiance, it was well worth the expense. Now that I've finally been there for a dinner service, I know that I'll be back a lot sooner next time!
