5 Tips For Creating An Inspiration Board For Your Photosession

This time of year is extremely popular for folks looking to plan fall or holiday photos in the Boone or Blowing Rock, NC area. Fall is at its peak and the leaves are putting on a splendid show just as winter starts to set in. Photographing couples and families during this changing in yhe season is one of my favorite things to do.

I think it’s helpful to collaborate with my clients so that the images we create together will be exactly what you’re looking for. Creating an inspiration board before your engagement or family photo shoot can be a big help in visualizing what you want the look and feel of your pictures to have.

Some photographers might not like when clients give them a Pinterest board full of photos that speak to them because the images might not be in-line with their personal style; however, I believe that it’s beneficial because it ensures that everyone is on the same page. My goal is to accomplish what my clients are envisioning in a way that highlights their unique personalities as well as my skill set. I want nothing more than to capture images that you’ll love for years to come!

5 Tips For Creating An Inspiration Board For Your Photoshoot

Here are some tips I put together on how to create an inspiration board for your photoshoot:

» 1. COLLECT YOUR IMAGES: You can find inspiration practically anywhere on the web. Do a google search or visit your favorite blogs. Just begin gathering images you like. Saving photos in one place will be the best way to share with your photographer. To make this process much easier, sign up for a Pinterest account if you don’t already have one. The next step would be to “Create a Board”. Once you create a board you'll be able to “pin” things you like to the corresponding board. Think of boards like a bulletin board that you stick pins in to keep things neat and organized. Your Pinterest board is where you will gather the pictures you have saved. The last image shows a *few* of my Pinterest Boards.

» 2. ENVISION THE END RESULT: Think about the type of mood you want your wedding, engagement, or family photos to give off. Are you looking for pictures that are more playful, romantic, casual, or etc? Keep this in mind when choosing images for inspiration. Something that clients have trouble with a lot of times is coming up with a location or choosing what to wear for the photo sessionPay attention to the location and posing, but also look at the color combinations that the people are wearing to help with your wardrobe selections later on. Using Pinterest to plan your photoshoot will help you clarify what you like and don’t like. The style of the photographer you choose will certainly play into this as well, so use their website portfolio and blog to select some favorites they've captured to add to your inspiration board along with the other images you may have found elsewhere.

5 Tips For Creating An Inspiration Board For Your Photoshoot

» 3. CONSIDER YOUR LOCATION & TIMEFRAME: The time of day/year, location, and weather will all have a huge impact on the types of images your photographer will be able to create so keep this in mind when selecting images to use for your photoshoot inspiration. If you’re having fall family photos done in the mountains, you don’t want to include pictures that were taken on the beach during the summertime. If you don’t already have a special place picked out for photos, the images you choose can help your photographer find a location that will suit the style you have in mind.

» 4. COLLABORATE WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER: Just because you’re gathering and sharing images that appeal to you doesn’t mean that you’ll want to spend time staging all the various poses that you’ve selected during your photoshoot. This would stifle the flow of the entire photosession if we tried to replicate another photographer's photos the whole time—they are merely a jumping off point. While I like to work closely with my clients to help them prepare for their photos, you also want to allow enough space for creative freedom so that your photographer can do what they do best.

5 Tips For Creating An Inspiration Board For Your Photoshoot

» 5. REFINE YOUR PINTEREST BOARD: After you’ve collected all of your initial images, you will want to narrow down your selections. Questions to ask yourself when refining your inspiration board: Do these photos have the look and feel that you want *your* photos to have? Does your board have an overall theme? Is the grouping of photos cohesive? Which images bring you the most joy when you view them? Dwindle it down to your absolute favorites so that your vision shines through. I recommend a maximum of 20 images as your goal because too many photos might disrupt the cohesiveness of the overall board. Once you're finished be sure to share with your photographer!

» BONUS TIP: If your shoot embodied one word what would it be?

Know any friends, family, or colleagues that are planning to do photos soon? Please share this post with them! I would greatly appreciate it! :-)

10 Tips for First-Time Airbnb Renters

When we set off to go on adventures, Cody and I always look for unconventional places to sleep while we’re away from home. In the past, I’ve had experience using homeaway.com, hostels, campsites, and more to act as our temporary home base. While we’ve stayed many a nights in hotels and motels, it’s just not our favorite type of lodging when we have other options available.

I finally decided to give Airbnb a try for our Anniversary Adventure in Asheville, NC a couple weeks ago, and I learned a few tips and tricks for using Airbnb that I'll definitely keep in mind the next time we use the website to book cheap accommodations. I was thinking that my fellow adventurers would find these tips useful just in case you’d like to give it a whirl for your next getaway!

Travel Tips for 1st Time Airbnb Renters

1. IT’S NOT A HOTEL - You’re paying for a place to stay, yes, but you’re also paying for an experience. Don't expect the same amenities. Pay close attention when reading the entire description of the listing to see exactly what the host is and isn’t offering. If you have a list of must-haves it’s up to you to ensure you’ll get exactly what you want.

2. DON’T ASSUME - Be sure to ask questions beforehand to avoid disappointment.Think about what you will need while you're away from home and make sure to inquire with the hosts to see if they can accommodate your needs. If not, you can make other arrangements (if possible) or choose another place to stay based on what suits you best.

3. SHOP CAREFULLY - Hunt with intention & use Airbnb’s filters to narrow down your lodging options based on what you’re looking for. Are the accommodations suitable for what you need? Is it an entire home that offers lots of privacy or is it a bedroom or an apartment attached to the hosts home? Maybe having your own space is important and then again, maybe it’s not. When you know what you’re looking for you have a better chance of finding exactly what you want!

4. KNOW THE RULES - Check the “house rules” in the description of the listing to see what the hosts expect of the guests that stay. Not all hosts have the same “house rules” so make sure you’re informed. Cancellation policy is a biggie to take notice of just in case your plans need to remain flexible.

5. BE OPEN MINDED - Staying in a private residence whether it’s lived in or used exclusively for rentals is a lot different than being in a bed and breakfast, hotel, lodge, etc. so embrace the experience even if it’s not exactly as you envisioned it. Get friendly with the hosts (if they are available) because they will, undoubtedly, have the inside scoop on the best places to eat & drink or popular things to do while you’re in town.

Travel Tips for 1st Time Airbnb Renters

6. BE YOU - At Airbnb they attempt to create more transparency by connecting hosts with renters through an online profile that helps you get to know one another. This ensures that you will be a good fit for the property and vice versa. Be aware: Your hosts leave reviews just like you do, so mind your manners if you want to get 5 gold stars for being a good tenant! This will directly affect whether future hosts will accept you as a guest at their property.

7. THE FEES - In some instances, hosts charge a cleaning fee & a security deposit on top of the nightly/weekly rate. The one we stayed at had neither so you could get lucky there. The deposit is refundable, of course, as long as you leave the place intact and undamaged. Airbnb has a great policy regarding this process so don’t think that a host can claim damages without proper proof. Airbnb also charges a “service fee” to handle and monitor the transaction between parties. Keep this in mind when you are looking for the best deal and calculating rates.

8. READ REVIEWS - Don’t skip this part because it’s where you’ll find honest feedback about the property & hosts. This is a tricky tip, though, because you’ll need to trust your instincts.

9. COMMUNICATE W/ THE HOST - Contact them to ask any questions prior to putting in a request to book. Not all Airbnb listings will allow you to book immediately, so keep this in mind if you’re making last-minute arrangements. Hosts will, oftentimes, need to approve your stay before you can actually reserve the room or home.

10. WATCH YOUR EMAIL - This is where your communication will end up when you message the host, request to book, or reserve your stay. It’s also where you’ll receive your “Reservation Itinerary” after booking that will include all of the pertinent details about your stay in one place that can be printed for quick reference.

11BONUS TIP:  RATE YOUR STAY - Leave a quick but thoughtful review because the hosts rely on feedback to continue booking their listing(s). As a renter, it’s also really useful to read reviews that were left by others, so think about taking a moment to leave feedback after you return home.

Do you have any tips for using Airbnb based on your past experience? Or have you thought about using the site to book lodging? I'd love to hear from you in the comments!

5 Simple Ways Moms Can Practice Self-Love Everyday | Guest Post by Andi of Beets & Okra | Redefining Self-Love Series

Before I was a mom, self love was easier. That doesn’t mean I was always good at it, in fact, I had a pretty bad habit of putting myself down and finding ALL of my flaws. Not very loving, huh? Things have changed tremendously for me since I became a mom. I may even go as far as to say that I am better at loving myself now than I ever was before. Why? Time is precious and I want to make sure to fit it in because I know practicing self-love is crucial.

5 Simple Ways Moms Can Practice Self-Love Everyday | on www.wayfaringwanderer.com

From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I learned that my life was no longer my private business. Anyone and everyone thought it appropriate to comment on everything from my size to my food choices. Before I had good sense about it, I felt a little beat down by all those external expectations. At that moment, I promised that I would love and nurture me! How do I do it? I strive to practice these five principles.

Here are 5 Ways Moms Can Practice Self-Love Everyday.

1. Be confident that YOU know best.

Doubting that parenting decision? Don’t. I might not always feel confident in my parenting decisions but acting confident seems to make life a little easier. For me, this is a ‘fake it ’til I make it’ principle. We all know that every person on this planet has advice on how to raise kids. Thank you lady in the grocery store line for telling me my baby is clearly cold. I really appreciate it! NOT. Just because someone has different ideas does not mean that you are doing anything wrong. My baby happens to be hot natured and he doesn't need to wear socks every time we leave the house. Thank you very much!

Moms have an incredible instinct when it comes to their kids and should feel confident about that.

When that nice lady pipes up with her advice, just smile and nod, knowing that you have made the right decision for you and your family. Mama knows best!

2. Love and accept you for YOU.

“I should have or could have or should be or could be.” NOPE, don’t do it. Stop the judgment and criticism. Loving yourself means loving ALL of you, especially the imperfectly perfect parts! Stop judging every decision you make or every flaw that you see and start living. We are our harshest critics but it isn't productive and we end up just feeling guilty and worthless.

Let go of all the criticism and expectations, just enjoy being a mom.

Trust me, you aren't alone. Just last week, we had company and I noticed that some of my panties were on the couch in a pile of clean clothes. Oh well. Hello world, I wear panties and I haven’t had time to put them away. Sorry, you will have to deal.

3. Let go for YOU.

Wouldn't it be nice if things were just how you wanted them? Let’s face it, that’s probably not gonna happen all the time so you might as well accept those things you can’t change and move on! In our house, we have a baby that has severe re-flux. I don’t mean he spits up some. I mean, all day every day on any and all surfaces, dogs, toys, mom, dad, bed sheets, and clothes are covered in half digested breast milk and pureed foods. We can’t change it, trust me, we have tried. I completely changed my diet, I have fed the boy probiotics since week one, I have rubbed him head to toe in every concoction known to man. Nothing works! The doctor says he will grow out of it. We accept it as it is and move on. Maybe you have to accept that your toddler wants to dress herself in a princess costume EVERY DAY for school or that all of your house plants died because you forgot they needed water to thrive. It’s okay!

Let it go and accept that this is the way things are for now.

In time, your life will probably come back to a more “normal,” less chaotic place, but I bet you a zillion dollars that you will miss the days full of slobbery kisses, half digested food on every surface, and sticky hands touching everything. I know I will!

4. Know when YOU need to to say no.

I know you want to be super mom but if you’re feeling exhausted, like you have been run ragged. Look at what can be changed. Maybe all you need to learn is how to say NO!

You don’t have to do it all. Here is your permission to do what you can and no more.

For me, this meant leaving my job. I realize a lot of moms don’t have this option but it was the only way that I could have the time and energy to spend on my family. Maybe for you this means skipping out on an out-of-town event or locking yourself in your house for an entire weekend so you can stay in your PJs without brushing your hair or your teeth. It’s fine! SLOW DOWN and feel confident that by not over-committing, you are doing a great service to yourself and your family.

5. Find time for the things YOU love!

Let go of the guilt and breathe, hand the kids over to your husband, and lock the bathroom door. Fill up the tub with warm water, crank up some music, and R E L A X. It’s okay. He can handle it, I swear, and he may even appreciate you more when you emerge from your “you time.”

You can only care for your family if you are feeling well yourself. Think about what you need to be whole and well.

For me, it’s a hot bath with the aroma of lavender filling the air, a massage, wholesome food, and finding time to create things. Whatever it is… DO IT. Don’t put it off. You deserve an hour to yourself every now and then so indulge!

Just Remember: Moms, you are doing a great job! Keep it up. We need you, we love you, and we support you! Make sure you return the favor to yourself. You are perfect just as you are!

How do you plan to practice self-love today and beyond?!

We’d love to hear your takeaways and observations in the comments!

5 Ways to Practice Self-Love with Art | Guest Post by Katie of KR Creative | Redefining Self-Love Series

I have had a love for art all of my life, especially in high school. My high school art teacher suggested graphic design to me as a career option and it was a perfect fit! I took a few years off after high school and then I did finally go to college for graphic design… just like I had planned. Studies of fine art go hand in hand with graphic design, so I got the opportunity to learn some different mediums in college as well. It wasn’t until Christmas about 4-5 years ago that I received the best gift ever. My husband bought me an easel, paints, brushes, and canvases. He wanted to see me get back into creating with paint. From then on, fine art has also played a major role in my life.

5 Ways to Practice Self-Love w/ Art | Guest Post by Katie of KR Creative

Yes, it’s true, art is a way of practicing self-love. It has been a major stress-reliever for me in the past several years since that Christmas day. I started painting, learning different techniques such as oil painting, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, and my favorite… mixed media art. I can’t get enough! There are online classes and workshops, video tutorials, books, and an online world of creative people to connect with on Instagram and other social media sites. I have connected and shared art with many people that way. I even teach art classes at my own little shop now. Dream. Come. True.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
- Pablo Picasso

Here are "5 Ways To Practice Self-Love With Art" just like I do!

1. Art Journaling - This is a wonderful way to take some time for yourself and get out what’s inside your head or write down some encouraging words or quotes for yourself. A lot of people use a moleskine journal or 110 lb cardstock and 80 lb mixed media paper to create in because of the thickness of the paper which will withstand the layering of paints, inks, collage, etc. Create a background first (so relaxing), and then collage with papers, magazine cutouts, or just doodle on the pages. Write positive messages to yourself, inspiring quotes, or journal.

5 Ways to Practice Self-Love w/ Art | Art as Love by Katie of KR Creative

2. Attend an Art Class - Make some time for you & attend an art class. I have taken several online art classes and gone to some in person. I now teach art classes so I can share the benefits of creating art with others. Even teaching art classes is a way of practicing self-love for me. Sharing art with others & seeing how excited they are about it makes me feel great. Find my class schedule here www.krcreativedesigns.com/eventschedule

3. Making & Trading ATCs  - I discovered what an ATC (artist trading cards) was a few years ago and have been creating mini masterpieces ever since. An ATC is a small artist trading card size 2" x 3" and can be created by using any medium you choose. For me is was a much needed break to take the time from my busy schedule of taking care of my family, working a full-time job, and running a growing business of my own. This tiny piece of art takes little time, but is a huge stress reliever. The little messages that I include are positive messages for myself & others. It gets even better... you can share your art by giving it away to someone special or trading with someone. I found many swap buddies on Instagram. Search #ATC or #artisttradingcard and you will find so many people who might want to swap mini art with you.

5 Ways to Practice Self-Love w/ Art | Artist Trading Cards (ATC's) by Katie of KR Creative

4. Solo Art Project - Relax and spend some time doing something just for fun. It's okay if you don't have a large chunk of time, too. I sometimes start a project by first working on the background one night and finishing it up another night. My favorite is mixed media art. You can find inspiration on Instagram or Pinterest. I have many Pinterest boards I use for inspiration as well as some of my own art and design projects. Follow me on Pinterest http://www.pinterest.com/kradke/ if you would like some creative inspiration for yourself.

5. Read Art Books - I have found some amazing books on Amazon. I have found them to be very inspirational and a great resource for learning different techniques. I have acquired a pretty large collection over the years, but my favorite is "Taking Flight: Inspiration & Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings" by Kelly Rae Roberts.

I can't tell you how big of a hypocrite I feel like writing about self-love. I'm only a few posts into it and I already want to abandon this project altogether because I don't know what the hell I'm doing! That's the fear talking. Those are the doubts that are creeping through the backdoor of my brain trying to shut me down, and I can't say that I haven't been close to allowing that to happen.

5 Ways To Practice Self-Love by Wayfaring Wanderer Boone, NC Photographer

Who cares whether or not I know what I'm doing?! This personal experiment has been fun, albeit trying at times as I attempt to turn this practice into a daily habit. While some steps have been a lot harder to handle emotionally and mentally than others, this journey to redefine self-love is something that I will continue. For now, I'll keep sharing my experience with you here on the blog because...

Self-love is something that a lot of us need more of as I have learned by observing other peoples behavior along with my own.

My thoughts are that if I feel like I need more support, encouragement, and inspiration in my life that I need to be that for other people, so this is why I am sticking to this mission, not just for myself but also for others who could use more self-love in their lives, too!

The "Redefining Self-Love Series" is still in full effect and I have been doing what I can to continue practicing self-love for myself on a daily basis. A couple weeks ago I shared Part 1 of "5 Ways To Practice Self-Love" and I've been implementing the steps which I will share about next week if you’re interested (let me know in the comments, if so); however, this part 2 offers 5 (More) Ways To Practice Self-Love that I've been using along with the other tips that I shared in my previous post. Below is a recap as an infographic I put together so that you can quickly scan what we've already touched on so far.

5 Ways To Practice Self-Love Infographic by Wayfaring Wanderer Boone, NC Photographer

All of the items I've highlighted in Part 1 & 2 aren't something you DO and then you're DONE, these are all meant to be practiced repeatedly! Taking action using any one of these ten easy tips is the first step to breaking crooked patterns we can unknowingly become comfortable with. It's time to REDEFINE SELF-LOVE! Who's with me?!

Below are 5 Ways To Practice Self-Love:

TRY NEW THINGS

Do something that you haven't done before, something that you think would be fun, something that you think might be interesting, or something that you think will help you learn or grow. Find an event or class that intrigues you, maybe you've wanted to try it for a while but have just made excuses not to. Finally take the time to give it a try this month. Make a plan, pick out a class/workshop/etc., find a sitter if you have kiddos, and commit to doing it! Trying new things is what helps us expand beyond our current routines so that we open ourselves up to new and exciting experiences that we might not have otherwise.

Bonus Points if you do this alone. Yep, don't ask your BFF to join you. This is another way to really hone your self-love skills so that you're pushing yourself outside your comfort zone even further.

5 Ways To Practice Self-Love Quote by Wayfaring Wanderer Boone, NC Photographer

STOP NEGATIVE SELF-TALK

I am guilty of toxic thoughts. I have to constantly flip ugly inner dialog into something more positive and uplifting. Once I realize it's happening, I can snap myself out of it fairly quickly by questioning my harsh, inner-critic. "Wait a second! Is this really true?" It would also help to think about it in terms of how you talk to friends or family, if you wouldn't say those things to someone else why would you say/think them to yourself? You deserve just as much kindness as you show others!

Bonus Points if you write it out in your journal. Writing is therapeutic, especially when used to have a conversation with your sabotage goblin. Seriously, question yourself…in writing!

MOVE TO THE MUSIC

I don't spend enough time listening to music nearly enough during the week. Most of the time I'm listening to music if I am cooking dinner or taking a shower; however, I don't typically listen to music while I'm working at my computer because it doesn't help me to focus like other methods I use. This is why I want to implement mini dance parties on a daily basis. Set an alarm for any time once a day, pick out your favorite song, and shake dat booty! I guarantee that you will be laughing and smiling by the end of your three-minute dance break!

Bonus Points if you are brave enough to make a goofy video of you dancing like a crazy person and share it with me on the Wayfaring Wanderer Facebook Page!

BE AFRAID BUT DO IT ANYWAY

There are lots of things that I hesitate doing because I'm scared. Really. What's the worst that could happen? Even though the idea of doing something—whatever it is—terrifies you, just do it anyway! As long as it's not hazardous to your health, of course. Unless that's how you get your kicks then it's perfectly fine with me whatever you choose to do as long as you're being safe while doing it!

Bonus Points if this is something you've put off doing for longer than a year. Aren't you ready to get this off your plate or put the project in motion?! Start today! Just one step a day will make all the difference.

5 Ways To Practice Self-Love Quote by Wayfaring Wanderer Boone, NC Photographer

SAY I LOVE YOU (TO YOURSELF)

Now this will definitely feel a little weird when you start doing it. I know I felt kind of odd when I uttered these words to my reflection. But I started this a couple months ago and I've been doing it ever since. So, every time I see my reflection whether it's in the mirror or the side of a tea kettle, I always stop and look myself in the eye, take a deep breath, smile, and say I LOVE YOU! Like I said, it seems silly and you will probably feel as such, but it's a wonderful practice to put into place to be more present and practice self-love at the same time.

Bonus Points if you take a picture of yourself (from whenever) and put it in a place where you can see it everyday so that you can do the same self-love practice even if you don't happen to see your reflection!

This concludes Part 2 of "5 Ways To Practice Self-Love." I hope that some of these tips may prove useful in your quest to embody more self-love. I'll be sharing a behind the scenes look into my mentally challenging journey of redefining self-love and the first-hand experience I've had with practicing these tips next week, so stay tuned! To be notified when new Redefining Self-Love posts are available, sign-up for updates from Wayfaring Wanderer HERE and “LIKE” the Wayfaring Wanderer Facebook page to get connected!
