*I haven't been so inclined to take any TtV shots recently, so here is a quasi-replacement for the ~Juxtapose~. The first image is SOC (straight-out-camera), the second has some minor brightness/contrast adjustments, and the third has had a complete make-over, using cross-processing. Personally, I like the final, cross-processed version, especially compared to the drab and nearly colorless original.
I'd love to know which one you like better out of the three.

Saturday Hike

Boone Fork Trail Mosaic

This past Saturday, we went for a nearly 5 mile hike on 'Boone Fork Trail'. The weather wasn't the most motivating, as it was overcast the entire time. We decided to take the trail backwards, unlike the way that most folks go, we headed straight instead of taking the immediate right at the trailhead. My reasoning for this being, I wanted the first thing we went through to be the part which is closest to the road, and the part that went through the campground first, instead of at the end. By that point my connection with nature is severed, by taking it backwards, I can get that business done with in the beginning. And use that time to get into the hike, and get a good pace going all at the same time.

I liked it better the backwards way. After a mile or so you come to open pastures, which on a clear day gives you a great view of the backside of Grandfather Mountain. But like I mentioned earlier, we weren't so lucky weather wise. Once you travel through the pasture, you come to the peak before you dip back into the forest. The descent is far easier than the ascent would have been, if we went the 'right' way. Now that I mention it, the 5 mile loop wasn't strenuous at all, I don't even think I broke a sweat! Had we went the 'right' way though, I assure you that I would have been huffing and puffing.

After the descent is where the trail starts to get really interesting. Throughout the hike you cross sections of the Bee Tree and Boone Fork Creek in excess of 2o times. I made the mistake of not bringing the attachment to put my camera on the tripod, which made it hard to capture shots of the mini-waterfalls, or ones that I was happy with. It's really important to have a tripod when shooting those type of fast-motion water scenes. Learning the hard way before didn't really help me remember to bring the dang attachment.....but that's another lesson eh?!

The most substantial waterfall was "Boone Fork Falls", and at a mere 25 feet, wasn't really all that substantial. Hiking trails that are next to a body of water are my most favorite, the sound of rushing water is so calming for me. The hike felt really good for my body, and I needed to get out and get moving. My spirit suffers severely when I don't get outdoors. Nature is so motivating for me. Does it do the same for you? If you don't hike trails, what do you like to do that helps restore yourself after a rough day, or week?

Jones House

Jones House

On Friday, I took some time before my Acupuncture appointment to head over to the Jones House to check out an exhibit called "Untitled" that I read about in the newspaper. Normally, the hours don't coincide with my work schedule so, had I not taken Friday off, I wouldn't have been able to go - they are not open on the weekends. It was a beautiful day, unusually warm for this time of year, but that was the best part! This would be my first time going to the gallery since being in Boone; I don't really know how I let that happen but.....let's not forget that I'm new to this 'art' stuff. As you can see, the gallery is just a house, and there are offices throughout so the entire place wasn't dedicated to art. But even for it's compact size, they packed in a lot of various artists throughout the gallery, so, if you can imagine, the walls were pretty much covered. I even peeked my head in the bathroom to see what was hung up in there, but that was sorta weird.

It took me just over an hour to go through the entire place and talk to a few people, which reminds me, I have a personality. I tend to forget that sometimes, I forget that...... I have the uncanny ability to talk to anyone about pretty much anything, and sprinkle that with a little charm when I'm in the mood, and I'm pretty much compatible with anyone that I come in contact with. Friday reminded me of how sheltered I have become, but in many ways it's been a good thing, the new house (we're renting) is part of the reason why I've become such a homebody. When you're comfortable, and you like being there, you don't have much reason to go out all the time - know what I mean? The apartment we lived in previously was very very very small, & to give you an idea of how small, it was under 500 sq ft........*gasps*.......but it was cheap!

Anyhow, my main point was, we like to be at home, and I don't feel the need to socialize a whole lot, but networking is what it's all about. Or at least this is what I'm learning. I sparked up a conversation with a guy photographing a lady for the newspaper, he gave me his business card to check out his website, and of course I told him about what I'm into and wot not, and he seemed genuinely interested in the work that I produce......just casual conversation, really. The difference between us being, he introduced himself as being a 'fully trained' photographer, and his first question was "What do I shoot with?"......stumbling on my words, I answered "Well, I don't have any formal training in photography, it's just a passion of mine." Now, to me that statement sort of downgraded me a bit compared to him being 'fully trained' and all, not that I felt inferior or anything, don't get me wrong, that's not what I mean at all. But I can see how, in someone else's eyes they may perceive it that way........don't you? Or maybe you're all like me, and you don't really judge people in that way?!?!

All in all, it was good for me to get out and communicate and interact with other people. It's good that I get these issues out of the way before next Friday when the gallery opening comes. I'm assuming that there are going to be a lot of people there, but I've never been before, so I don't really know. I suppose we'll see soon enough!

A human being is part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole [of] nature in its beauty.

Chris Jordan's
Running the Numbers Series: (Once on website, click "Running the Numbers" to see pictures) Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. "This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. The underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming."

I really wish that I could see this exhibit in person, so that I may fully comprehend how colossal the numbers really are. Some of you may not be the type to take information of this sort to heart but it truly affects me in a big way; the most that I can do is make sure that you are exposed to the same information in hopes that it may have a similar influence. To the Root

Winter Floret

I'm glad that I make it a habit to revisit the many folders of photos that I tend to accumulate. They have become so much more vast since I took on the {366} Photographic Journal. Trying to manage so many photographs can prove to be a daunting task. Sometimes I fall behind, although I've been very proud of the fact that I have yet to lapse completely. At times, I've feared that I would forget to take a photo ruining the entire year, but I have daily reminders in place to try and prevent that from happening. Anyhow, these two photos are from a walk I took around Bass Lake a couple weeks ago. I found them, and realized that I in fact did like them. I suppose that my frame of mind at the time these were downloaded wasn't really keen on the notion of dead flowers; I don't really know either way. Which brings me back to the fact that it's good to go back. Oftentimes, I will find something I wasn't ready to see in a certain way until I've had some time away. Does that happen to you?

Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.

Findings:

I tend to judge books by their covers, which is initially what enticed me to find out more about this particular book. The cover is so whimsical with the branches bending every which way.........and so far from what I have read of the first chapter her writing mirrors just that. She paints a very detailed picture......I can't say too much more since I have yet to read it, but I hope to change that very soon!

The Monsters of Templeton

(Link will take you to Amazon)

Excerpt from the first chapter:

That morning, before I drew my hand away from the monster, I felt an overwhelming sadness, a sudden memory of one time in high school when I slipped to the country club docks at midnight with my friends, and, giggling, naked, we went into the dark star-stippled water, and swam to the middle of the lake. We treaded water there in the blackness, all of us fallen silent in the feeling of swimming in such perfect space. I looked up and began to spin. The stars streaked circular above me, my body was wrapped in the warm black, my hands had disappeared, my stomach was no longer, I was only a head, a pair of eyes. As I touched the beast I remembered how, even on that long-ago night, I could feel a tremendous thing moving in the depths below me, something vast and white and singing.

Here is a sneak peek at the first chapter - Link

*I took the time to read it and was immediately drawn in to Laurens style of writing......I just love the metaphors that she uses.....and after Botany of Desire I will be happy to grab on to some much need fiction. This book may just be the ticket.

+ Not exactly the same scene but the concept is comparable. I didn't particularly care for the strictly digital shot of the exact scene so I chose a different frame. Would that then make the comparison irrelevant since it's not a photo of the same exact scene? Hmmmm, oh well.......I don't usually discriminate, except for when it comes to my photos, but I can do that! Anyhoo, I took these photos about a week and a half ago, while on my way to Acupuncture. One day as I was leaving a treatment I "saw" this abandoned building off to the side of the gas station in Valle Crucis; before I started the TtV I never really noticed it before. The people pumping gas were staring at me, and it was quite uncomfortable for the first 5 minutes I was there........after that I stopped paying attention to what was going on behind me so that I could make the most of what time I had before my appointment.

+ I try to make mental notes of things I see along the road so that I can stop when I'm better prepared, and sometimes I forget........I've gotten into the habit of writing EVERYTHING down though, otherwise ideas would be lost. I have lots of scrap paper laying around with random notes that need to be transcribed so I can categorize them so I can make sense of it all.....I love when I come across old lists or notes that I haven't seen in months, especially when I can check something off of it!.........It's like "hey, I did that"......Check!........That happens to me quite often actually, I guess the act of writing it down will still allow me to recall and complete what needs to be done even if the list is no where to be found.

Blue Hole Cascade I

*These waterfall photos conclude the last of our visit to Blue Hole......these are by far my favorite of the entire bunch, what do you think? I don't have a whole lot to say, the photos of that beautiful place can pretty much speak for themselves......and as far as the WOW factor goes - I give it an 11......but then again they'd probably ALL be 11's if I were to dole out the WOW factors!! Waterfalls will always have a special little corner of my heart where nothing else can even begin to compare......there is something so mesmerizing about the water's journey and the point at which it descends that I'm sure will always amaze me no matter how small or tall it may be......

  • For each word you get right, we donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.
They tally how many grains of rice you have donated so far, today I've donated 2,460, I wonder how many people that would actually feed?! Anyways, this game is really fun not to mention the fact that you can help people by playing a game that may boost you vocabulary at the same time. Now, don't blame me if you don't get any work done.......lose contact with loved ones.......have dictionary dreams.......or any other adverse situations that may come about from playing this game too much or for too long.......Thankfully, it can be justified by the fact that, "You're helping people!".............Let me know what you think!!

I got my Valentine's day flowers a day early, Cody surprised me with them since I was having an unusually bad day. They were so bright and beautiful, I was in the middle of washing dishes when he brought them in.......I promptly finished so that I could arrange them and take photos before the sun went down.....thankfully, I got done in time to take a few shots. The bouquet reminds me of spring, and it was full of some of my favorite flowers too. Cody knows which ones I like best! Lilies, daisies, and mums especially.......one was a Fuji Spider Mum that was orange and white, very crazy looking but gorgeous. Our Valentine's Day dinner was fabulous.......you will definitely hear all about it soon enough. Hope you all had a great Valentines day!

Blue Hole "Part Two"

Blue Hole Alcove

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.
~John Burroughs

Blue Hole Alcove

*Here is a photo of another waterfall at Blue Hole. This one was tucked in a little alcove above the main cascade. By the time we made our way back up the sun was then beaming down, making the greenery above the waterfall a tad bit overexposed, oh well....I can live with that.
I would describe this waterfall as being dainty.....it was just cute....not very tall, maybe around 6-8 feet?! The pool of water that the outpouring flowed into had rocks covering every inch of the floor, it was quite a challenge to set up my tripod there, but I managed just fine. I was halfway in the water, and the legs of the tripod were partly submerged in the ice cold pool, it definitely took some fancy footwork for me to stay dry.....although at one point I slipped and thought I was done for! Thankfully, I made it out safely.....there is one more waterfall @ Blue Hole......I will post those photos tomorrow. I hope you've enjoyed our day trip to Blue Hole so far......stay tuned!
The second photo is not my favorite, but I did want you to have a visual of what the surroundings looked like......

It's not entirely about the "WoW" factor for me.......on a scale from one to ten......I don't care.....
It's more than just the actual sight that I am focused on when amongst nature.....sounds also play an integral role in the experience as well.......especially when visiting a waterfall.....
I got the "WoW' factor from a Waterfall Guide Website that featured Blue Hole, which scored pretty low based on their scale.......maybe I'm just easily impressed.....I suppose if the water level were a bit lower it may be a little less interesting........for me.....probably not.......but then again I have that amazing ability to find beauty in all sorts of different places........does that mean I'm easy to please?!........not really.......I thoroughly enjoyed myself out there none the less.......it was a gorgeous day........at times a little too sunny which didn't really help me with long exposures but I made do......

Steps

These were the most charming steps I have encountered thus far in our hiking/outdoor excursions.
They were definitely unique compared to other steps we've seen at various other places.
Not that they were the main attraction or anything, but I thought that they were pretty cool.

Waterfall Overflow

This is just a little teaser......
not at all the highlight of "Blue Hole" by any means......
and as far
as waterfalls go......
it was simply the overflow of a much prettier and more scenic cascade....

Nature's Kingdom

And a scene downstream from the waterfalls.....
I thought it was just as beautiful as the rest of what we got to see......
the rock cliff, stream, and surrounding forest......
it was all so invigorating........
did I mention, I had a great day (Saturday)......

*The 'real' waterfall photos will start tomorrow

Hole in the Wall

Rico's

This place was pretty much in the middle of nowhere, out in the sticks of Tennessee......
We saw this place on our way to the waterfalls, and afterwards decided to eat there. Otherwise our choices were pretty limited in the small town as country stores would have been our only other options. We were pleasantly surprised at the offerings available on the menu.

Mozz Sticks

That was our appetizer, homemade mozzarella sticks.........not your normal mozzarella sticks either......oh no, these were JUMBO mozzarella sticks!

Huge Mozz Sticks

Just for scale, you can see that it's as long as the fork handle, and they were pretty thick too. Is your mouth watering yet?!?! Oh, I'll make a trip out there again just for those mega cheese sticks I tell you what......

Lunch @ Rico's

Here is the actual meal we had......and at a very reasonable price I might add.....
I ate Eggplant Parmesan with Spaghetti, Salad, and breadsticks.......man, I sound like a little piggy, huh?!?!?! To my defense, I didn't finish it all, I happily finished that off today - with Cody's help......Cody had a Gyro, which is what you see wrapped in the foil. It was a great meal all in all........if we're ever out that way again, which I'm sure we will be, I'll definitely be stopping in to see Rico again. He suspected that we weren't locals, especially with me toting my camera taking photos of my food and wot not.......being a tourist is the way I like it......wouldn't have it any other way!

*I'd like to hear about any roadside gems you've stumbled upon before, good or bad.....

Today was absolutely gorgeous, white puffy clouds and all..........which are my favorite by the way.

The Snake I

This is a photo taken from "The Snake", a stretch of road in Shady Valley, TN. Actually, three separate roads make up the snake. A haven for anyone who has a need for speed, or one who is especially fond of switchbacks.
"There be Twisties"

The Snake II

To get to our destination we had to pass through Shady Valley, TN, making the snake only a 1/4 of today's adventure. I drove there and Cody drove on the way back home, my shoulders were somewhat sore, and the back to back curves where becoming too much for me to handle, yeah yeah I'm a weakling.

*I had such a great day.......stay tuned to see what else we did today!

Wish Me Luck

FINALLY!! I waited until the last minute, but what really counts is that I actually got it done, right?! And it wasn't because I work better under pressure of anything, what I really am is a procrastinator........ah the truth comes out. Nearly 2 months ago I found out about this, and had plenty of time in which to accomplish sorting and choosing which ones I wanted to enter, but it's done now, I feel lighter........now tomorrow or today actually given that it's 1:15am I will be able to focus on doing something fun!

I thought it would be of interest to see the same subject from two technical aspects. The top photo was taken with my regular digital camera while the second photo was taken using the TtV technique. As you can see the result you are left with gives two completely different finishes. I have really enjoyed dabbling with the 'new' technique. My plan is to continue working with it down the road with hopes that I will get better, and maybe I will find a way to make it more manageable, and possibly convenient!

What are your thoughts? I know some of you have expressed an interest in the photos.....care to be more specific on what you like about it? or don't like about it for that matter...........

Winter Beauty
When it's winter in the Valley
and my breath hangs in the air,
The snow will crunch beneath my feet
and glisten in the air.
The stars at night light up my world
so I never walk alone;
It's clear and crisp and beautiful
in the Valley I call home.

Thoughts about this photo:

  • It was one taken during the beautifully wretched and freak ice storm this past Friday.
  • The sun came out for a very brief period of time and brought some blue skies with it.
  • Everything started melting at warp speed, we had to watch our heads for falling ice.
  • I feel terribly lucky that we got stuck at home that day and I was able to capture it.
  • I'm not always that lucky when it's that beautiful outside......
  • I'm also thankful that we have some very neat scenery around our little house 'in the valley'.
  • This photo makes me think of a dreamland.
  • It was very surreal to witness everything encased in 1/4" thick ice.

Update:

*How is your weather? Today was unusually warm, I was outside sleeveless, it was wonderful! Especially compared to the down pour we had yesterday.......

Things you should know:
  • This photo completely contradicts what the weather was actually like today.
  • I could use a little sunshine, what about you?
  • I struggle with getting to bed early, I'm going to take a crack at it tonight.
  • We've avoided going to the grocery store for almost 5 days now, the fridge is seriously lacking.
  • I finally finished sorting through my photos from 2007, and chose my favorites, which turned out to be more than I expected.
  • The photo competition deadline is this Saturday..........I better get a move on!
  • There is something that I don't like about this photo, although that doesn't out weigh what I do like, which is why I'm sharing it with you.

Down & Out

Do you have what it takes?!

Okay, so, what's this all about? Maybe you did or didn't notice that I was completely absent this past Friday...........we woke up to a valley encased in ice.......and this ice was so thick that the very weight of it downed power lines around our neighborhood, not to mention our front yard! We were virtually trapped since the power lines were laying across our driveway, as well as across the left and right sides of our road once you pull out of the driveway, and with the added branches scattering the road, it looked like a battlefield! We called as early as 7:30 in the morning but didn't see signs of relief until almost 11:00 at night.........on a normal day when you get to stay home due to certain extenuating circumstances you have constant stimulation from all sorts of things that require electricity. I was earnestly lost without my normal sources of entertainment!
Down & Out
It occurred to me while lighting copious amounts of candles later that evening that there was a time when people did do without the luxury of electricity, and in some places still do. Electricity, as a luxury, what a concept, eh? I know that this instance of us having to do without for an entire day was something that was forced upon us, but it definitely opened my eyes. It opened my eyes to how dependent I have become upon these luxuries, and how depriving yourself can allow us to place our focus on other things. I spend a lot of time on the computer, if you ask the right person, they'd declare too much of my time probably. I suppose that I've always been the type to test myself, to see what I am capable of doing or not doing, although this would not normally be a test I would place upon myself. When is the last time you did without the luxury of electricity?

Do you think that you could endure such a challenge imposed on yourself?!
