Pearly White Posies

Posted in: My World Tuesday

I'm sad that the Bradford Pears have pretty much passed their prime here in the high country. At least this spring I was motivated enough to get out and shoot some photos of the pearly white blossoms before they faded.

Right now, I'm seeing more of the Japanese cherry trees, redbuds, and dogwoods. It seems like I can find something new every day if I look hard enough, so I'm always on the lookout for what will pop up next! How about you? Any spring beauties to share?

It's been a while since I have done a haiku.
The transition between winter and spring always finds me in a deeply contemplative mood.
I hate to think that I have to endure it, but the fact of the matter is that, I do. A lot of us do.
The awakening of spring is the emergence of a "real" beginning,
one that I know I am very much looking forward to.

We are supposed to have 70 degree weather this weekend. I plan to be OUTSIDE!
Still don't know what to do yet?!?! But, we are giving much thought to camping out somewhere.

The tree is just another favorite from our Sunday Flurry.
It's one that I have photographed on a few occasions since it sits very close to our house.

Tonight, we attended the gallery preview at the Turchin Center to see Wonder Collides on display. Tomorrow, we are going back with some friends for the real shindig! This evening was for members and those being showcased. Tomorrow, is also when voting begins for the people's choice award. I know I can count on you guys to cast one for me, can't I ;o)

Or maybe, I'll just bribe you?! Bribes are goooooood.
Speaking of bribes, did you enter to win a MINI PRINT TRIO from my Etsy shop?!
If not, you still have time to enter for your chance to win.
Visit this post for more details.

Well, it is past my bedtime. Thank goodness tomorrow is FRIDAY!
Hope you all have a great weekend whatever you have in store.

Where Wonder Collides

Wonder Collides

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.
One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity,
of life, of the marvelous structure of reality.
~Albert Einstein~

If you've been around WW for a while, then you might recognize this photo. If not, the above photo is a TtV shot I took sometime last year. The abandoned barn in the field next to our house is accompanied by this wicked willow tree. On the day I took this photo using the TtV method, it was extremely foggy. In my opinion it really added to the nostalgic feeling that this photo oozes.

So, why in the heck am I reposting a photo that I have already shared?! Well, this photo was one I entered in this years Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. The good news is that it was a winner chosen to be in the exhibit with 46 other photographs! I am really looking forward to this years reception. The deadline for getting a matted and framed print is at the end of this month, thankfully, I'm already covered! Last year, the whole framing deal freaked me out, but since going through the process once, I'm not worried this go round. Two competitions in one year so far.....I'd say that I'm off to a pretty good start!!! As TD would say, WOOT-WOOT!!

Voting for people's choice award has not yet opened,
but I will be sure to let you know when it does!

Autumn Burn

Autumn Burn

Taken on a walk this past Saturday.
I was happy to still see signs of Autumn.

For the most part, we stayed close to home this weekend - I didn't want to overdo it.

I did, however, discover how much I love our new Planet Green channel.
Especially the show Wa$ted.

My mouth is on the mend, and I've been feeling better. Thank you for the well wishes.

I even finished organizing my little art station in the laundry room - even though it took all weekend.

We went out to breakfast this morning,
had some pancakes with pumpkin cream cheese topping,
cranberries, and walnuts -
they were delicious!

It's really 1:00am right now and I can barely keep my eyes open.
Hope you all had a great weekend!
Night-night.

Slow & Steady

Slow and Steady

By day we explored the park, but by night we strolled around town.
It wasn't our typical camping quick-trip, but I still loved every minute of it.
The variety of excursions we ventured upon were fairly diverse, and it was just the right mix.
We had a great time! I can't wait to share the trip photos with you.
I should have something ready by tomorrow.

In other news:
I am delighted to hear about all the go getters participating in "Let's learn photoshop together".
Don't forget to forward me your links so that we can all observe how you've applied the new know-how.
This is going to be fun! I have yet to do mine, but I will soon.
I anticipate putting out the new lesson this coming Thursday.
Stay Tuned.

Make Everyday Earth Day

I always have been, and am pretty sure I will always be a sucker for trees. A quick search for "trees" in my Flickr photostream brought up a number of imagines which were centered around trees or just had trees in the photo.

Aspen

I am always compelled to shoot a tree or two. In any season or time of year they are always lovely, with or without leaves, tall, short, aspen or pine......you can learn from them. And they could teach you a great deal given the chance.

Rooted

I think of their roots embedded into the ground, and it reminds me to anchor myself when I'm feeling unbalanced. I see how resilient they are, and it reminds me that I too have the power and will to survive and succeed against the odds.

Aspens

Although they may be aesthetically pleasing, they are also ecologically important and provide a great deal to the environment in which we all live. From the air we breathe to the shade upon with we seek shelter, they are there, unfailingly and without asking for anything in return.

Shooting the Breeze

Donating to a worthy cause on Earth Day was the very least that I could do. I thank you all so very much for enthusiastically participating to help rebuild the Brazilian Rainforest through the efforts of The Nature Conservancy. The "Plant a Billion Trees" campaign is far from reaching their goal.

Howard's Knob Park II

When I first put up the "Where's your Green" post, they had 237,000 trees, now six days later they are up to 263,588! So, they're getting there slowly but surely............My total donation was $40.00 which equates to 40 trees; I had 18 request total to "Plant a Tree for Me!" and some who simply left a comment with the word tree in it, which I counted any way!

Serepentine Silhouette

These photos are of all sorts of different trees, some here, some there.......from North Carolina, to Florida, and even Nevada.......a little of everywhere! None of which ever made it to the blog, which works out great since now I have something to share with you :o)

Thank you all again for keeping me inspired......it means so very much to me.

Behind the Bloom

Behind the Bloom

Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors, there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.

~Rainer Maria Rilke

I just can't seem to stop taking photos of these splendid little blooms I'm seeing all over the place. As spring wears on you'll notice how big of a flower freak I really am. Taking photos isn't the only thing I find fun about the becoming blooms. For the ones I can't name, I take great pleasure in finding out what their names are. I'll come home after taking photos to scour the internet until I know for sure what it is I have captured. We moved into the new house during the late summer of last year, so I don't know what other wildflowers will pop up until spring blossoms even further. So far I've spotted crocus', daffodil's, and grape hyacinths. Last year we had all sorts of wildflowers sprout unexpectedly between summer and fall, so I'm hoping that spring will offer a bounty just as delightful.

One person who knows how deep my love of flowers goes is dear ol' Cody. He even brought me a bouquet of Alstros home the other day as a piece offering. He called them, "be nice to me again flowers", as I'm sure some of you will understand; it's that chocolate craving, I hate the way I look, time of the month! At least it won't be going on while I'm on vacation in Big Sur!!

I've been in my own little world somewhere on the west coast today, making plans for all the places I/we intend to go and stay at while in Big Sur. Cody's in charge of camp food, while I take care of the other details!
I have read through the entire guidebook, and the locations that I marked in the book with little red sticky arrows have now been added to the google map I created. I sound obsessed, don't I? Well, it's sort of a deal for me, I can't help it. The time off is what I am most looking forward to, especially since this week has been extra difficult for me in the pain management department, but today I get the deep tissue massage, and tomorrow I have my Acupuncture, hopefully relief is in sight. Alright, enough complaining!
Back to my dream world until it's time for my massage!!

THOUGHTS:
  • The image of this tree is hauntingly alluring.
  • I love that it evokes nostalgia in buckets.
  • My new favorite photo taken so far this year.

Update:
  • Today I received the rest of our materials for the upcoming trip.
  • Funny thing, I've received so many little signs pointing to the vacation I am eagerly anticipating.
  • I get more excited by the day. 34 Remaining........
  • Tomorrow I will post the information about the trip.
  • Don't want to jinx it before I reserve the plane tickets! (I'm weird like that)

SOC Tree
SOC Tree

The original photo, to me, seemed so very plain. Looking at the image on screen left me with the feeling that something was missing. Initially, I didn't pay this shot any mind, but after sorting though, I thought "What they hay", let's see what I come up with. I can't even tell you exactly what I did to the post-processed version step by step, but either way, I liked the way this originally boring and mundane shot turned out. It's got a sort of spooky antique feel to it, don't you think? Even though it may look like it, I didn't use an Infrared filter, in case you were wondering. In it's own right, the SOC (straight-out-camera) shot is okay from a technical standpoint, the colors are nice, it follows the rule of 3rds, and the lines are appealing, but overall, nothing is spectacular about it. Not that I think the finished product is the most amazing piece of work ever, but I like that my impression of it was so easily changed by some minor alterations.

As Cody inadvertently pointed out to me today, I am slowly becoming a little more open minded, and something that I wouldn't have given much thought to, let's say a year ago, is something I have begun to think about. And I'm not really talking about any "thing" in particular, I'm just pointing out a realization that was made. I like to be reminded that I am continuously growing, and my circumstances are not going to remain the same, not that I don't like where I am. What I mean is that, by this time next year, I will have lived and learned, essentially molding me into a new me, a different Jessica..........there was a time when I was afraid of change, and I was scared of the what ifs that consumed my mind........Now, I warmly welcome the prospect of what may come, and I no longer have that fear of not being in complete control of what may have made me uncomfortable once upon a time.
This is a very freeing conclusion for me..........

How do you feel about change? Oh yeah, and which photo do you prefer?

Oh, would that my mind could let fall its dead ideas, as the tree does its withered leaves!

Permafrost

~ In a perfect world.....I'd get a snow day.....I'm pretty desperate to get an extra day or so off right now but refuse to call in "sick".......just because I'm hurting doesn't mean that I'm "sick"......It just means that sitting here is making me........well........for lack of a better term.......sick!.......most people want to sit around and veg out on sick days......me, I'd much rather be out hiking and taking pictures instead of sitting in a solitary position all day long.....Thankfully, I have an Acupuncture appointment today so maybe I will get some relief then - I've got my fingers crossed.....no more moving refrigerators or microwaves for me anytime soon.....I'm stubborn, I know.
~ The above photo was one that I took during the freak ice storm we had a few weeks ago, which resulted in a quasi snow day......I post it in hopes of conjuring yet another one sometime this week....I wish I knew some sort of snow dance!.....anyways, I just never got around to posting this photo but it deserved to be here as much as any of the other ones so.......here it is......this a a tree in the field right next to our driveway.....if I composed the shot differently with more of the left side of the frame in view you would have seen the downed power line......which by the way is still there!.......I'm guessing it's the phone line since we don't have a land line thus never calling them to come out.....Lights, Cable, Phone....all different people.....they don't care if the other guys stuff is laying around posing a hazard.....Everyone's got that it's not my job mentality these days it seems......

============================================================================

Interesting tidbit:

ZeFrank: I appreciate his way of thinking, and to me this video seemed valid for how I'm currently feeling. His other videos are zesty and often times peppered with slants on current events. Although this one has no explicit language or other offensive content.

*Cody stumbled upon this guys stuff last night, he's a pretty interesting character. This video was part of a podcast project he did mon-fri for an entire year.

Tree on Hilltop...........

Tree on the Hilltop

I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do.

Willa Cather (1873 - 1947)

Someone once said that the "Tree of life is self-pruning", I have slowly come to understand and embrace this simple little statement. You see, I have been feeling somewhat disenchanted as I wait for the holidays to roll by. I've watched the meaning of the season get lost in the midst of the turmoil created by certain pressures we feel at this time of year. Waiting until the last minute to buy for someone on your list is particularly stress inducing, although I think the cause for my distress comes from other issues that go a little deeper. Looking back on the past year has opened my eyes to how much has really changed during these 12 months. When I began to anticipate what is to come for two thousand and eight is where I begin to get anxious. I've had so many ups and downs and I know that 2008 will be filled with the same, but different?! The majority of my discomfort is in part due to my inability to 'really' come to terms with the changes my body has gone through during this time. I have told people many times that I have come to terms with it all, but inside when I dig a little deeper, that just isn't true. My Acupuncture treatments are offering some very valuable insights into other underlying problems that the pain I have and feel on a daily basis is a very small part of when looked at as a whole. I am attempting to absorb as much as I can with what little they give me to work on, and through some independent research am learning about changes I need to make with things that I'm either doing or not doing right now. This is a commitment that I need to make in order to aid my recovery that has taken way longer than I initially expected. I don't want to end next year with my body in the same condition. I want to support my whole body by treating it the way it deserves to be treated. I'm not going to set myself up by making this some New Years Resolution, the time is now and I need to adopt these practices as soon as possible. I plan to continue with my Acupuncture treatments as I've seen some minor results thus far, my hopes are that I will continue to see results which have a bigger impact in the near future. I like the idea of what is to come, not just with my condition, but for the future. I'm sure you've noticed that time doesn't wait for anyone, and unless I want to watch my ideas go to waste I need to embody that which inspires me!

Favorite Things..................

'Twisting Tree Necklace'

Twisting Tree Necklace

Maybe you've noticed or maybe I've failed to mention the fact that I love, love, love TREES;
taking photos of them, wearing them, sitting beneath them, etc.
The Twisting Tree Necklace is something I purchased (a few weeks ago) the instant I laid eyes on it, especially since it was only $11.99, whata deal**! Unfortunately, I'm dropping the ball on you and the Twisting Tree Necklace is now sold out, but they did still have the rings available tonight when I checked. Which by the way, are equally as cute. Other items are available throughout the website, and as the name "ModCloth" implies they do carry items that fit in that genre along with others that are similar in taste. I was extremely pleased with the websites service, my ordered was processed very quickly and it was shipped faster than lighting!

**Maybe you would like to know that these are not sterling silver, hence the low, low price!
*This vinyl tree necklace to the right is next on my list if I get to it in time!!

Autumn Omission
Autumn Omission

The acoustics of the season tend to change as the month wears on, most of the trees are, for lack of a better term, naked now. I can't help but gawk at the branches and how beautiful they look against the sky. What lies beneath is just as interesting to me as they were with the changing leaves. I can appreciate a tree in any condition it seems, although this picture wasn't really about a tree.
This picture was inspired by the lonely chair I spotted behind an abandoned house located on Hwy 105, which is a main stretch of road I travel on occasion. I saw it, oh probably about a month ago, and instantly had the urge to pull over and photograph the lone chair, but I resisted.
Until the perfect day came along, and I was prepared, it wasn't really meant to happen. On the way home from Grandfather 2 weekends ago I finally decided it was time I brought my idea to full fruition. Cody definitely helped motivate me as well, the awesome assistant he is. Okay, that's sort of our joke, that he's my assistant - sets up the tripod, carries the equipment, etc.
Anyhow, the mission was accomplished and I was pretty pleased with the results.
What are your thoughts about the lone chair, or have you ever had the idea to photograph something out of the ordinary?

Post Processing

So, I've been lounging most of the day and taking some time to tinker with my new laptop. It was nice hanging out in bed this morning whilst having the ability to try out my new program on some photos I've been dying to manipulate. The above photo is from the Stone Mountain Set, if you have seen the original then you know how dramatically this photo has changed. Personally, I think it looks pretty awesome this way, although the original had a completely different appeal since it was complimented with a brilliant blue sky. As my friend "B" pointed out I've always been somewhat of a purist when it comes to my photography, meaning I never really spend a whole lot of time altering my photos since I generally like them the way that they are. Now this photo reveals to me that a little post-processing never hurt anybody.
Let me know what you think, which one do you like better?! Click on the link above to see the original.

Starts with a Seed

A wise man once said, "Lance Armstrong wasn't winning Tour de France on his tricycle!", and as I couldn't stop laughing hysterically when Cody said this something about that statement rang so true in my mind. What he was trying to tell me was basically that everything comes in time, and essentially we must take baby steps to reach the status of ones who put their heart and soul into something and alas conquered. True, sometimes it comes easier for some while others struggle to accomplish such feats. In one day I can be encouraged and discouraged just as easily and in equal amounts. I see things that compel me to create but then I will also see some things that makes me wonder whether or not what I have to give will be as widely accepted as I hope. And when I'm sifting through the seas of the many other artist amongst us I can't shake the feeling of intimidation I have about putting myself out there like them. It seems as though it's a constant battle trying to convince myself that this is where I take that leap of faith and hope for the best. It's all a matter of perception, and yes, there will be those that like my work, and there will be those that don't. Plain and Simple..........but not really.

Splendor of the Sun...............

As I came across this photo during my initial sort I passed by it briefly but then felt like I should go back and take another look. Upon second glance as I stared at this picture I suddenly got this nagging feeling, I like it, but I don't like it. There are so many beautiful things I see about this picture but then there are problems with it that I don't like just the same. I like how if it weren't for the blue sky it would almost look as though it could have been taken at night, although it's the sun that twinkles through the trees, and just so happens to back-light the brilliant orange leaves all at once. I also like the path of sunlight dancing on the top of the water; had I exposed the photo trying to light up the tree trunk, the effect would have been completely different. I don't normally think about these things a whole lot but I've been reading this new book called "Understanding Exposure" and despite the fact that I've only read 1 chapter it has totally opened my eyes to this whole new world. I confess, I know very little about what I love when you consider the technical aspect of photography. The glue that holds it all together would be that I carry an intense passion to share and document this momentous time in my life. I do think that I can be a better photographer but only if I spent more time on those creative choices waiting to be discovered with every single shot.
I'm looking forward to my next chapter!
